You could pass these two timber piles without noticing them. And soon, they’ll be gone. Driven into the Thames foreshore, this is where the iconic and much-loved Greenwich Book Boat once moored, close to the Cutty Sark.
Deserted for more than 30 years, home to moss & lichen, they’re now due for removal, coming out in mid-November.
The Book Boat’s founder, Bob Cattell, died last year. His boat, a Humber-Keel barge named Hegaro, specialised in children’s books. Looking back, Greenwich still retained an industrial, gritty vibe, very different from today. More on Bob here:

One of two Bascule Chambers below @TowerBridge. When the bridge rises into the air, this is where the massive counterweights see-saw down, taking up most (but not quite all) of this buttressed arena. The cool air smells of damp brick and dark oil. It’s magnificent!
The Bascule Chambers are a working environment & not open to the general public (this was a work visit) but #TowerBridge makes up for that with its wider visitor experience – especially the glass-floored, panoramic Walkways.

Probably the last warm, October sunshine these Greenwich Peninsula willows will ever see. The riverwall needs work & the path widening, so they’re coming out. Works start in May. The jetty will also close to public use, reverting to industrial use. I’m going to miss this offbeat spot.
On the plus side, the project should deliver positive ecological gains, even with the loss of the trees.

A few more shots of the walk between Purfleet and Grays, tracing Essex’s Thames Estuary coastline, and passing below the QEII Bridge.
The path passes pill boxes near Stone Ness, which have been guarding the river for more than 75 years. They seem to get a fresh spray job every year, there's lots of graffiti art along this route.
Downriver, at Grays, the hulk of the Gull Lightship, dating back to 1860, slumbers in the thick, Thames mud. And, beyond, where the path ends, the huge gantries of Tilbury Grain Terminal reach out over the river.
